| Is Babe Ruth pointing at the center field fence, predicting a home run, or is something else going on here? It's October 1, 1932 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Game 3 of the World Series™ between the Yankees™ and the Cubs™, and Ruth, who had already homered in the first inning, is batting against Charlie Root with one out in the fifth and the score tied 4-4. The Yankees had won the first 2 games in New York, and Cubs fans, who tormented Ruth from the moment he arrived in the Windy City, are really letting him have it now. Ruth, 37, is also hearing it from the Cubs' bench. So, with the count at 2-2, Ruth raises his right arm, points and shouts something, although no one can hear what he says. He slams the very next pitch over the center field fence. The Yankees go on to win the game 7-5 and sweep the series. As time passed, Ruth remained evasive about the incident. Others said he was shouting at Root. And others said he was jawing with the Chicago dugout. Whatever, it remains a delightful bit of baseball lore. Features
