There are several ways to extend your garden's bloom time. Look for flowers that bloom more than once per year, or choose different cultivars that bloom at different times during the year. Warm colors, such as the reds and yellows of tulips and narcissus, seem to pop toward the front of a landscape, while cool colors, like the hues of purple violets or blue iris, recede into the background. Perennial tulips are special because, unlike many hybrids, they come back reliably year after year. If the sun warms the soil in the container too early, the bulb will send up shoot and flower before an adequate root system has developed. Breck's full time staff of bulb experts spends the entire year in Holland devoting themselves to obtaining cream of the crop bulbs for shipment to customers in America.
