One of your first considerations when planning a garden should be bloom time. Keep tall plants toward the back of borders with shorter plants at the front. If the sun warms the soil in the container too early, the bulb will send up shoot and flower before an adequate root system has developed. Perennial tulips are special because, unlike many hybrids, they come back reliably year after year. Bloom time, color and size are among the most common reasons for choosing plants. You may also choose them because of fragrance, texture, or culinary value.
